Allies Computing today released a pair of articles detailing their recent findings from two pieces of research carried out relating to the e-commerce sector.

New research on email and SMS in e-commerce published

The first, “How do I stop my site visitors signing up with fake email addresses?”, investigates the importance of an email validation service for ecommerce businesses, and discusses other strategies to discourage users providing disposable email addresses when signing up with a website.

Findings showed that 82% of users who give fake email addresses make use of a disposable email address, which can be easily spotted using an email validation tool. Additionally, it is suggested that users will be more likely to provide their real email address if they trust the site they are signing up with.

The article goes on to suggest ways that site owners can boost user trust in their sites at the data collection stage.

The second article, “SMS Delivery Updates – The Rising Star” provides insights on how ecommerce customers prefer to receive updates while waiting for ecommerce purchases to arrive.

This research found that over a quarter of UK ecommerce users prefer to receive delivery notifications via SMS due to its speed and ease of use. The findings encourage ecommerce businesses not to ignore this demographic, and to provide SMS updates for customers who wish to opt for it.

84% of people want to see their expected delivery slot.

Additional findings relating to order confirmation emails and communications surrounding failed deliveries are also detailed.

Dan Cooper, Allies CEO, commented: “”Following on from our recent successful study into Irish consumers and their use of Eircode, these two new studies showcase our drive to provide our customers with the tools, advice, and modern research findings they need in order to succeed in the changing world of e-commerce.”“

This research supports the recent addition of mobile number validation and email address validation to the Postcoder Web API, available to both new and existing customers.
